Verbs with 2 words

English is strange. We use verbs that have 2 words which can totally change the meaning of the original verb. For example:

  • Take = reach for and hold
  • Take over = absorb another person's work, conquer
  • Take off = remove, rest from work

We use these words every day and forget that they are confusing for non-native English speakers. For example, students didn't know that the term "look into" meant to investigate instead of literally, look inside an object. Try to notice when you use these words and think about asking a level 2 student, do you know what "go over" means?
