Level 1 - NEG
Spanish-speaking students tend to say 'much' thinking that it is the same as the word 'a lot' - mostly because of the word 'mucho' in spanish getting them mixed up.
In an teachable moment, students learned the word 'a lot' while we studied the concept of a/an/some in class.
Raul asked "but why did taxi drivers say 'a lot'?" all the time? After a few minutes of hearing his examples of when this happens, we realized that what he (and everyone else) have also heard is "allah" the Arabic word for God in Islam. A deeply cultural moment since one of our students is Muslim in this class and explained the term "insha allah" too.
